The Tax Practitioners Board, or TPB, regulates registered tax agents and BAS agents in Australia.
This page gives clients a simple overview of what they can expect from a registered tax agent and what a tax agent needs from them.

The TPB maintains a public register of tax agents and BAS agents.
You can use the register to confirm that a practitioner is registered and check whether any conditions apply to their registration.

What you can expect from us
As registered tax agents, we must:
- act honestly and with integrity
- act lawfully in your best interests
- manage conflicts of interest
- protect information relating to your affairs
- provide services competently
- maintain our knowledge and skills
- take reasonable care when understanding your facts
- take reasonable care when applying the tax law
- keep appropriate records
- supervise work performed by people assisting us
- comply with the Code of Professional Conduct.
We remain responsible for tax agent services performed on our behalf.
What we need from you
To help us provide services properly, you should:
- give us complete, accurate and truthful information
- provide documents and explanations on time
- tell us when your circumstances change
- keep the records required by law
- answer reasonable questions
- review returns, statements and forms before approval
- tell us promptly if you discover an error or omission
- meet your tax and payment obligations by the relevant deadlines.
Your right to ask questions
You may ask us to explain:
- the scope of the work
- our fees
- important assumptions or risks
- why we need particular information
- how your information will be handled
- whether staff or contractors will assist with the work
- how to raise a concern or complaint.
